Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay began to develop her artistic and creative side when she was a young girl due to her aunt Denise. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, let her pursue art literature and the theater in the daylight. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's model of the power of art as an activist vehicle. DuVernay was educated by her mother with a conscience for social issues, and pushed DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay resided in Compton throughout her youth, however she would spend every summer with her father's extended family in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby city of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, inspired her later to make a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she was awarded diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay was a student at the college when she became interested in production for television journalism. DuVernay began her career as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the task of watching the residence and scrutinizing the trash of one of members of the juries. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalistic duties and decided to change to the world of public relations. DuVernay was hired straight after graduating from college as an intern at the studio that was small. She was hired in 1999 and founded her own firm of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Besides PR, the agency developed several lifestyle websites like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
